Pes Anserine Bursitis
Introduction:
The Pes Anserine Bursa is a small lubricating sac located between the shinbone (tibia) and three tendons of the hamstrings muscle at the inside of the knee. Pes Anserine Bursitis is the inflammation of this Bursa.
Causes:
The Pes Anserine Bursa is a small lubricating sac located between the shinbone (tibia) and three tendons of the hamstrings muscle at the inside of the knee.
Pes Anserine Bursitis is the inflammation of this Bursa.
Factors predisposing to Pes Anserine Bursitis:
Doing excessive hill running, and sudden increase in the distance of running.
- Tight Hamstring Muscles
- Obesity
- Osteoarthritis of the knee
Clinical Features:
- Pain slowly developing on the inside of your knee and/or in the center of shinbone, approximately 2-3 inches below the knee joint.
- Increase in pain while exercising or climbing stairs.
Investigations:
An exercise done to rule out stress fracture.
Conservative Management:
- Rest
- Ice
- Anti-inflammatory medicines
- Local Injection
Surgical Management:
Surgical management is rarely recommended but excision of the symptomatic bursa can be done if there is intolerable pain.
